My First Etsy Treasury!

Recently, my blue Christmas tree was included in this

beautiful etsy treasury by songbird58.

Appropriately named,  this lovely treasury is called

 "Christmas Past" .

I've never been in any treasuries before so I am thrilled to

find myself in this one.

Etsy is my favorite "store".

I just can't seem to get enough etsy.

The blue tree is available for sale in my shop.

I plan to add more of my fluffy nylon net retro trees in the

coming weeks.

Thanks for looking and have a great week!

Mod Podge Colored Chandelier Crystals

Maybe some of you have noticed bloggers writing about various projects that use Mod Podge mixed with food coloring to color glass?

Have you also noticed how things kind of end up going "viral" in blogland, especially thrifty, easy crafts?

I noticed this on photo on Pinterest a couple of weeks ago.  It was "pinned"by several people.

I googled a bit and found several blog posts going into detail about how to Mod Podge and bake glass in order to add color.

Creative Little Daisy gave a little tutorial that helped encourage me to try it out.

The colored coating on the glass won't be food safe or water proof, so you won't be eating, drinking or cooking with those pieces but it's very easy to change a piece of clear glass into a piece that looks like vintage depression glass!

I knew I wanted to try this out sometime and it just so happened that I had finally gotten around to painting an old chandelier the night before.

Here are some before pic's.

This had been salvaged out of an old house by our office handyman, Robert.  There was nearly no finish left on the metal.

Still, the birdcage shape and intricate details were beautiful!

I decided to spray paint it using Heirloom White by Rustoleum.

That paint is another viral trend I read about in blogland!
Rust Oleum should now add the phrase
"As seen in blogland" to their label! Heehee!

If you ever blogged about that paint back then, thanks! It was easy to spray and covered in two coats.

Last night I was looking around and found this picture!

So gorgeous!

I am not sure of the original source
but this photo really inspired me!

I had to try it, but what color to use?

This chandelier will hang in my bedroom, so which one - pink or aqua?

I guess I spied red first and just rolled with it, in my excitement to try this project!

I already had a bottle of Matte Mod Podge.  I poured about 1/2 a cup into a bowl and added about a drop of red food coloring and stirred well.

Note:  If your mixture is too thick, add just a drop or two of water to thin.  I needed to thin mine a bit.

At first it was a little too red, so I added more glue.  It lightened up to a nice pale pink then.

I decided to do a test first on just one crystal.  I brushed the mixture on with a soft brush and placed it on a parchment paper covered metal baking sheet in a 175 oven for just a few minutes.  I didn't time it, but it was probably 10-15 minutes.

When I came back, the crystal drop was pink, it was dry and it looked o.k.   I was willing to risk all my crystal drops in the name of having a cool project to blog about!

I decided to try dipping the crystals in the bowl so there wouldn't be any brush marks.

At first I dipped the whole drop, the round top crystal and all.

After a while, I decided it might be really pretty and easier to just coat the dangling teardrop, leaving the top button clear and decided I liked this better!

This is a messy job and food coloring will stain your counters.  Use lots of paper toweling!

Because I didn't want them to lie down, I went to great pains to hang the drops from a cooling rack that I set on top of another rack in the oven.

I placed a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper underneath to catch any drips that might want to fall onto my oven floor or the coils.

Going into the oven, wet and still a dripping a bit.
I baked them at 175 for about 20 minutes.  With the heat this low, you can't burn them so if you go over, it's not going to matter.

The only small mishap was that once I pulled the crystals out of the oven, some of them swung toward each other and they stuck together instantly, but they pulled apart easily and weren't damaged.

Pretty pink drops coming out of the oven
A note:  Resist the urge to peel or pull on any bits that stick out a little.  You can end up pulling all the colored coating off.  It is literally dried glue.

Remember your Elmers bottle that you had in grammar school?  It will pull off, though not as easily as Elmers since it's baked on.  Getting it all off once you start that peeling is difficult!  So don't go there!

The finished colored drops are not exactly clear. They are sort of opaque.  They're not flawless, in spite of my effort with the rack but they are still very pretty.

They turned out the prettiest soft shade of pink.

I have to order 20 more drops to finish my chandelier.

I haven't decided whether I will color the remaining crystals or mix and match clear drops with my pink drops.

I will be sure to post pictures once the chandelier is up but here is what it looks like now.

These pictures were taken in my closet... It's pouring rain and there was more light there than any place else in the house tonight!

I could also hang the chandelier from the clothes rack
for the best view!

Clear crystals cost just under $1.oo each.  Colored crystals purchased from the same store average between $2.50 and $3.50 each.  It's makes a big difference when you need 35 pieces to outfit a chandelier that you only paid $25 for!

I got my prices and will order my clear crystals from Antique Lamp Supply.

I hope you enjoyed my impromptu pink project!
As always, my favorite projects are done spontaneously with things I happen to have on hand because I'm somewhat ADD and drift from project to project!

Have a wonderful rest of the week!  Fall temperatures and clearer weather are expected here after tonight and I can't wait!

xoxo,

Jennifer

Heirlooms

An Heirloom is something we hold on to, that we will never part with.  It can be something that was found, like my Infant of Prague Statue that I found in an antique mall.

I'd been hoping to find a statue like this.  Had looked at them on ebay.  I never thought I'd get so lucky to find one this beautiful by chance.  I love his handpainted face. the pink satin and cream lace.  The patina and chippiness is just wonderful too.

.

It can be something that was passed down, that was held on to  for future generations. This tiny jewelry is from my family.

Heirlooms don't have to be perfect because their value is more sentimental than monetary.

They are irreplaceable at any cost because even if you find another, it's not the same.
When my Grandmother died, my mom told my sister and me to pick out one piece of cut glass that was hers.  I picked out the candy dish compote above.  It wasn't the largest piece and maybe not the prettiest, but I remember her keeping Christmas candy in that and that was why I wanted it.
This beautiful plate was in my mother's dining room.  She received it from her Grandmother.  I hold on to it because it's so beautiful and was counted as a treasure to both of them.

It was the first in a collection of rose plates that I still collect.

What do you own that you consider to be an heirloom?

HAPPY FIRST WEEKEND OF FALL!!

I can't wait for cooler (drier) weather and for all the fun things I have planned to do all the way up through Christmas!!

Romantic Lampshade Makeover

I was way under the weather this weekend... It was beautiful outdoors, but I was sick!
A nasty cold kept me inside and mostly asleep all weekend.  I only went out to get ice cream :-) and run a couple of errands I couldn't get out of!

While I was out picking up my son's eyeglasses, I found myself (NOT so innocently) in Goodwill (heehee!) waiting for Lens Crafters to open!

I picked up a fairly boring little white lampshade for $5.00.  I thought it was too much but I knew what I wanted to do with it and it was the exact size I needed.

I spied a few deconstructed lampshades like this on etsy recently... All beautiful and well worth the money,
but way out of my price range!
Plus I wanted to try making my own.  It didn't look all that hard!

A couple of years ago I bought a box full of vintage linens, lace and doilies at an estate sale.  The lady of the house must have been a seamstress because I have never seen so much needlework and lace in one place.
She must have cut and saved the lace off of every old slip or dress she ever had.

Some of it was really special.  The pink band must have been the hem of an old slip.

Most weekends, I try to do a few things I consider productive or creative or fun in order to feel like I made the most of my weekend.

This weekend however, I was just worn out.  The cold I was fighting, the painting I did last week, the work week, all kind of caught up with me!

Last night, I mustered up the determination to do this one little project (that I just couldn't wait to do) because I was so inspired by the box of lace I'd been keeping in the garage!

It was a nearly no sew project... Mostly I just twisted pieces of lace around the skeleton of the shade.

Kind of like making a mummy!

The majority of sewing consisted of fastening the pink band onto the lamp once I had finished with the twisting of the lace.

I decided I wanted a little ruffle added to the bottom when I found this piece of embroidered lace with a little ruffle.

I tacked this lovely old lace piece onto the shade with needle and thread, when after an attempt at gluing it on, I decided that wasn't going to work and might not hold.

I finished it by fastening on a little vintage rhinestone brooch.
I don't remember what I paid for the lace but it was probably a fraction of the cost of the lampshade on etsy - FOR THE WHOLE BOX and NO SHIPPING EITHER!

I am thankful for the inspiration the etsy artist and the unknown seamstress from the estate sale gave me
to make this.

I am totally thrilled with it!

I was back at work today and feeling like my weekend was very productive because the sleep was good for me and my project made my world a little brighter and much more beautiful.

The lamp was a $10 etsy find.  The price was a donation to a humane society someplace that I was glad to give in return for such a pretty little lamp!

I want to share another lampshade that I found a few years ago and WON on ebay! It was one of the first ebay purchases, a total splurge and something I watched and bidded on up until the end because some person or persons wanted it as much as I did!
It came and it was HUGE and I didn't have a clue what I was going to do with it.  It wasn't until recently that I replaced the stained glass torchiere shade on this Tiffany style floor lamp with it.

The pink and cream certainly helped lighten things up.

You might be able to see that painting is at a standstill until hopefully this weekend as long as my cold is gone.

Like everyone else, I watched coverage of the September 11th tributes on television.  I was mostly touched to see how life has gone on with the families of the victims.

I was touched to see families viewing the 911 memorial at Ground Zero for the first time.

10 years have gone by and still we are not at peace.

My sister tells me 150 IED's were found in Kandahar yesterday, about half near the base that is across from her USAID compound.

I'm thankful for the military heroes in explosives ordnance who were there and risked their lives.

Who knows how many lives they may have saved!

Just keep praying for peace.

Peace,

Jennifer

Laboring on Labor Day weekend

You can probably tell from the above photo of a really messed up, bare walled living room that something is happening...

I've been taping, scraping, patching, sanding, washing walls, removing outlet covers, etc......

So, I think I bought the paint a year ago because I just couldn't put up with the yellow gold walls any longer, but as usual, I procrastinated.

My kitchen got some attention, My dining room got completely re-wallpapered and painted...

I am still working with a heat gun, melting and scraping 60 years of paint layers in the plaster walled bath room.  I'll be blogging about that one day, hopefully THIS year!

I had two gallons of Sherwin Williams "Crisp Linen" in my basement just waiting all this time and I was dying to have a lighter, more neutral color in the living room.

It's just so involved, painting.  Even my beautiful dining room is a mess while holding the living room's contents.

Thursday night I got some energy from somewhere.  I took  everything down off of the walls, I moved the furniture and I started prepping the walls.  Then I was committed, stuck with my decision.

It's been slow going this weekend but most of my prep work is done and hopefully tomorrow I will begin the priming.

I want to do this prep work perfectly because I've got to make sure that awful gold is never seen again!

I hope I will love the new color in my home as much as some pictures I have seen taken in other people's homes.  If not, (deep sigh) re-painting is not something I want to think about right now.

Will be sure to post more pictures when I am done and things are back in place.

Oops, I did it again.... last week.

I took in another stray.

This is a sweet female kitten.  She's not nearly as young as little Pippa but you would think they were from the same litter, the way they are playing and cuddling together.

I tried to find out who might own this baby when I found her crying up in my tree Thursday morning.  Orangina, my orange tabby is seriously displeased about this.  She stays away more and she is nastier to the new kitten than she was to Pippa even though the new kitten is much more docile than Pip, who can be a pest, and leaves her alone.

Sorry for the fuzzy pictures...

More news from here, my sister is in Afghanistan-again (my name for that country) working as of last week and has a two year contract.  She was unemployed for a very long time so this was a much needed job.  She's living in Kandahar Province, so her life will be much more isolated than when she lived in Kabul.  Kandahar is more dangerous, so she will be confined to home base along with her co-workers.  Since she's a writer, I suggested she start a blog because she will need a hobby!
My son and his band recorded his first CD (independently, of course, we WISH he had a big record deal... ;-)  They are still editing but he's excited.

I'm hoping your labor day is a holiday or a day to work and make some extra holiday pay if you so wish...

Hugs, kisses and peace,

Jennifer
